Honors Mentorship: Speech Pathology
my discovery's...
Assignment 1: Getting to know your mentor
Some of the important characteristics of a great intern..
-positive attitude
-dress professionally
-eye contact
-be willing to help out
-be on time
-talk 20 percent and listen 80 percent
-know your expectations
I am already learning more about speech pathology than I ever dreamed possible.
I hope learn how speech pathologists treat kids with severe impairments. That way if
I decide to pursue speech pathology in the future I will be more than prepared. I'm
going to ask questions and observe how my mentor works with different kids that
way I will get the most out of this experience. Real world experience is the best way
to prepare for the future. By going out and actually working with the kids who are
learning to communicate I will be more prepared for a job in the future because I
will know what to expect.

Assignment 2a: Leadership
After watching Russo's Ted talk I realized the importance of the younger generations
actions today. I feel as though many people decide they don't want to even attempt to
make a change because they feel powerless. Russo explained the dramatic negative
effect a generation full of indifference could have on society. This idea really resonated
with me ,and I am going to do my best starting today to change and make this world
a better place to live in.

Assignment 2b: Leadership
Below is a video I created that demonstrates all the important characteristics of a great
leader. They get people involved who otherwise could careless. They see the problem,
feel a sense of responsibility towards it, and take initiative to fix the issue.

Assignment 4: Getting Ready for Your Mentor
I read the "Getting Ready for your mentor" article ,and throughout the duration of the article
the author gives several tips and suggestions on how to get the most out of your mentorship.
I think one of the most important things to know when starting a new job is timeliness. This
is so important because it shows the employer that this is a priority for you. It also gave me
the idea to send a thank you note after the internship because it signify's the impact they made
on your future.

Assignment 5: Communication
Communicating with friends and family is drastically different. When speaking to your'e
employer it is very important to speak completely professionally and stay focused on the
task at hand. The employer expects the employee to communicate when there is an issue
or if there is confusion. If the employee can't advocate for themselves how can they be
expected to compete with other employees. It's also expected for the employer to let the
employee know if they are doing something wrong , or they want more from them. If the
employer doesn't do this it's hard for the employee to progress in their job. I plan to focus
on non verbal communication because I have a tendency to slouch which may give off a
bad message.

Assignment 6: Work Ethic
For this assignment I took a quiz that measures work ethic. It measures three different
variables interpersonal skills, initative, and dependability. Throughout the duration of
highschool Iv'e found that I often have to work hard to do well. It's been a struggle ,but
this quiz taught me a few things I can work on to be a better intern.
The average scores for women in the three field were 6.00 for interpersonal skills,
5.67 for initiative, and 6.34 for dependability. My scores were 6.07 for interpersonal skills,
5.62 for inititative, and 6.14 for dependability. My results did surprise me a little. If anything
I would have guessed my initiative score would have been the highest. I definitely can work on
dependability. Though I am rarely late often have a hard time contacting my employer to
reschedule or set my schedule up.

Assignment 7: Growing Leaders
This week I read a really great article by Tim Elmore from his blog called Growing Leaders.
It showed me that I'm proving that I am the best person for the job everyday for the rest of my
internship. It explained the top four things that employers look for in a great employee teachability,
initiative, responsibility, and high energy. I'm going to keep all these tips in mind especially the high
energy. I'm going to make sure I'm show how much I want to learn. If I show that am excited and
passionate about speech pathology then there may be more opportunities that become available to me.
Probably the most relevant idea that I saw in this blog was that this internship is "a year long interview"
and I need to do my absolute best to showcase my skills and passion for speech pathology.

“The intervention involved training sessions conducted over 6 months, homework activities, and meetings with course leaders. Positive outcomes included the support workers being more responsive to the adults they worked with, and making positive changes to their clients’ social environment.” (3)
Mark’s mother reported a history of her son’s communication having been ‘‘neglected’’, as well as feeling that she and Mark’s father had always been solely responsible for teaching other people how to communicate with him. By contrast, at Time 2, comments made by Mark’s parents indicated their appreciation of the professional insight, active involvement, and support. (8)

Assignment 10: Mentorship update
Speech pathology continues to surprise me every single week. Going into my mentorship I had no concept of how many different problems are speech related. For example kids with reading disabilities often need speech to help increase their vocabulary. I also learned how many special needs children have communication devices ,and that it's the speech pathologists job to find a way for the kids to be able to say what they want to say. I never imagined the depths that speech goes. It amazes me how much thirty minutes a week can imact the kids quality of life. This internship is making me consider speech as a career path much more seriously. It's easy for me to get distracted especially when my mentor is testing kids because it does get boring. I think I need to work on remaining engaged even during the boring parts of the job.
Assignment 11: Mentorship Write Up
My Profile: I have always loved working with children, and knew that I wanted to work with them in my job. I knew I didn't necessarily want to go into teaching. I started to look around for other jobs that work with children when I applied for Honors mentorship. My mom suggested speech pathology, and introduced me to one of her friends who work in that field. She explained the flexibility in the job, and the different settings that speech pathologists can work in. I was automatically in love with the job, and wanted to look into it further through honors Mentorship.
My Mentorship: Discuss where you are mentoring, who you are with, and give a good description of your activities. I am mentoring at Otwell middle school with Linda Kavazadeh. Almost everyday is a little different, and I absolutely love that about the job. Usually she will work with a kid for like twenty minutes, and then afterwards I'll ask questions about what I just saw. Sometimes she tests students, other days we are reading through passages and vocabulary terms.
My future: I plan on attending either UGA or GCSU next fall, and majoring in communications. This early exposure will help me immensely in college because I will have background in the field.

Assignment 12: Essential question
I have come to the conclusion, through my mentorship, that pretty much every student is different and therefore need different types of treatment. How are speech pathologists able to individualize the treatment, that will benefit the student the most, whilst integrating them into groups with other students?
I selected this as my question because every time I go in for my mentorship I struggle to understand how it’s possible to accommodate so many needs for different kids. I think by answering this question I will learn how to get the most out of every different student regardless of their needs. The treatment given to a student has a huge impact on the performance of the students. By learning the best things to do for certain cases I believe I will be able to do more in the future. This answer to this is extremely important to me because it will give me a leg up in my mentorship.

Assignment 13: Partner in your education
Mrs. Kavazadeh has helped me learn about a carer path that interests me greatly. I have learned about different aspects of speech pathology that I didn't even realize fell under the job. I currently received acceptance into UGA my first choice college. This is a long term goal that I achieved, and I'm sure being in HMP helped me receive acceptance. It will also help me in my future as I plan on majoring in communications. Working with Mrs. K has permitted me to learn a lot about ESOL students, and how they often qualify for speech services. I am now also considering this as a possible carer path. I look forward to the future and I am thankful to have a partner in my education helping me through it.

Assignment 15: Interview
For this week I interviewed my mentor. I came up with ten questions that I thought would help me decide if this is the right career path for me.
Q1. Whats your favorite thing about being a speech pathologist?
A- I love that I get to work with a wide variety of students. I am constantly doing something different, so it's never boring.
Her favorite things about the job are two of the main reasons I chose to intern in speech pathology. I hate being bored, and this jobs schedule is different almost every week.
Q2. What's your least favorite thing about being a speech pathologist?
A- There is a lot of paperwork that can become very time consuming.
I think it would be hard to manage the amount of paperwork that comes with the job. It definitely requires a lot of time management.
Q3. How did you decide on this career?
A- I was a linguistics major and originally wanted to become a professor. Then I took a class and changed my mind.
The way she found her career path was super unconventional, but she kept her options open which is super important.
Q4. What's the biggest challenge that comes with your job?
A- Balancing the workload and sometimes it's hard to measure some students progression
I think this may be different for every person.
Q5. How do you transition between students with severe communication disorders and simple ARTIC students?
A- Since I spend up to three years with these kids I learn who needs what, and it becomes easier with experience.
I feel like I would really struggle with this aspect of the job.
Q6. How do you handle the stress that comes with the job?
A- I remind myself who I'm doing it for. I also birdwatch.
I think it's important to make time to do things that you love to do especially when work gets stressful.
Q7. If you could change your job what would you pick?
A- I'd probably want to be a math teacher.
That's the last career I would pick. I hate math.
Q8. What's the most important quality that a speech pathologist should have?
A- You have to be a problem solver. Cookie cutter methods don't always work.
This was especially interesting to me because it shows that some students won't respond to treatment right away, so you have to find other ways that work.
Q9. Do you think it's important to establish a relationship with your students?
A- It is so important. Kids won't work of people they don't bond with. You have to listen to them.
I think this is a part of the job I would love the most.
Q10. Why is recording data on students important?
A- If you don't record data you don't know what you need to change.
I think this can also show you specific area where they are improving in.

Assignment 16: written proposal draft
Since Iv'e started my internship, my desire to learn more about speech pathology has only grown. I find myself asking more and more questions, so I can be prepared for what I'll have to do if I work in this area. Iv'e kept the same essential question, how are speech pathologists able to individualize the treatment, that will benefit the student the most, whilst integrating them into groups with other students, because its amazing to me that SLP's are able to get results from individual kids whilst they're in groups. I think a brochure or pamphlet would be the best platform to display my data because I will be able to use pictures and polls. I plan on doing a survey that contains a series of questions that go with my essential question. Once I generate the survey I will send it out to several SLP's in the county.

This week I have been gathering several article in seach of an answer to my essential questionHow are speech and language pathologists able to individualize their treatment, that will benefit the student the most, whilst integrating them into groups with other students? I have read multiple articles that descibe the steps a SLP usually takes when deciding the type of tretment a student needs. For some students it is better to have the SLP push into a classroom, some need individual treatment, but most often they work in small groups. Here are a few of the articles I read that helped me come to my conclusions.

Assignment 20: Last Annotative Bib
Dawson, Stacey M.L., "Pull-Out or Push-in Service Delivery Model: Conducive to Students or Teachers?" (2014). Education Masters. Paper 296.
This source discusses and analyzes which type of education works best for special needs students. It specifically addresses push- in and pull out models. It later goes on to analyze different credible literature sources in order to determine which method is more successful. This quote demonstrates how pull-out services can impact students, “Therefore of all individuals served under IDEA in 2011, 94% of the students spend at minimum, 20% of their day out of the classroom to receive related and instructional services.” This source is credible because it was written by a student at St. John Fisher College who is working on her master’s in education. It was published by Fisher Digital Publications. The URL indicates that the source is valid. This article most definitely relates to my essential question and all my research because it’s helping to answer the second part of my question “How are SLP’s able to individualize treatment.” The push-in or pull-out factor plays a huge role in the students results.

Assignment 23: Relevant presentation reflection

I after watching the video I feel much more equipped to handle public speaking. I will definitely be using the triple P meathod when I present my capstone. It was comforting to see how many Americans rally do struggle with public speaking. I get nervous very easily, but I think if I come prepared it will be easier to handle. I never thought to use a "hook" ,but I do think that makes the project and presentation more interesting.

Assignment 25: Abstract
I have been blessed to get the opportunity to be a mentee to Mrs.K, the speech pathologist at Otwell middle school. I have learned a lot about the strength and determination it takes to be a speech pathologist throughout the course of this year. I have learned so much that I struggled to find a research topic that encompasses something within the career path that I did not know much about. After much thinking I decided to ask the question.. How are speech pathologists able to individualize treatment, whilst integrating the students into groups? Since the first day I walked into my mentorship I was curious to see how she determined which students go in certain groups. After much research and questioning I have come to the conclusion that she groups them based on similar needs. She works with most of the kids for three years, and after a while she knows which student needs what and she is able to adapt based on that.
Assignment 26: Mentorship Reflection
I have gained real world experience from my mentorship. This is very important because i have decided to pursue this career path. I really do think this experience can help me get a job in the near future. I have gained irreplaceable knowledge that will help me excel in the classes that are ahead of me. By keeping an open mind I was able to get the most out of the experiences. In Speech pathology in particularly every day brings a new set of challenges. It was important to be adaptable and able to change my schedule as needed. I observed and asked questions as needed and that helped tremendously. By asking questions I was able to learn more about the confusing aspects of the job. I was truly passionate about what I was doing so that made it easier to inquire about what i was confused on. Going into it I really thought speech pathology was helping kids with letters. Although that is a small part of the job there is so much more to it. I worked with kids with learning disabilities, autism, blindness. I learned how different kids need different things, and how establishing good relationships between the students and the teacher help make progress. I would advise future HMP students to keep an open mind. It's really important to have background knowledge in the career path you are mentoring in. If I had done some research prior to my mentorship, I probably wouldn't have been as shocked at what it really was when I got there. Keep and open mind and be thankful for it because it is a really amazing experience.
